The Importance of Good Hydration for Fitness
Getting and staying hydrated throughout the day is essential for your body to perform properly. Water helps cells function, aids in transporting nutrients throughout the body, keeps a regular body temperature through sweating, and much more – making is the most essential part of the human body.
Depending on the intensity and duration of exercise, what you’re wearing, and your metabolic rate, basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the amount of energy expended while at rest. In the post-absorptive state, your body will elevate in temperature, causing your body to rid the excess heat by sweating.
Proper hydration is essential for energy production. Water accounts for 60 percent of body weight and is the medium in which all metabolic reactions take place. Most adults need about 10 eight-ounce glasses of water per day or half your weight in ounces. For those who are exercising, you will need an additional two cups of water for every pound lost during exercise.
Keep this in mind: The more you exercise, the more water you need to intake for performance.
Focus on your hydration by following any of the suggestions below:
- Keep a reusable water bottle near you at all times and mark it with ounces to drink throughout the day.
- Add flavor to your water with fresh fruit like raspberries or vegetables like cucumbers.
- Set an alarm on your phone to go off every hour as a friendly reminder to drink some H2O!
