Q: How many years have you been racing cars?
Landon: It feels like my entire life. I started racing competitively when I was 8 years old in go-kart racing and moved up to full size stock cars. My senior year, I graduated high school early and spent 5 years as Jimmie Johnson’s test driver. I won 4 championship rings being a part of that team.
Q: What do you love about racing?
Landon: It has changed over the years. When I was a kid it was really pure, it was nothing other than the steering wheel and the racecar. Now as I’ve grown in the sport and grown as a racecar driver, it’s about the complexity of the cars. How challenging it is to build a good racecar, and the challenge of trying to make a racecar successful and fast.
Q: What is the toughest part about racing?
Landon: Managing the highs and the lows. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions. Sometimes the highs and lows happen over the course of a year, sometimes they happen over the course of two weeks. The toughest part is keeping stable and not letting the highs and lows get to me too much.
Q: What is your pre-race routine?
Landon: I like to mentally prepare for what’s going on. I eat a big dinner the night before, not too late. It’s important for me to get 9 hours of sleep the night before a race. I also don’t like to get up too early on race day. If the race is at night I’ll get a good workout in the morning.
Q: How many days a week do you work out?
Q: What is your typical workout routine?
Landon: I usually start at 5:30am with a run, 6-7 miles. After my run, I circuit through about 30 minutes of strength training in the gym. I like to do a lot of body weight exercises.
Q: You recently ramped up your workouts, how has this helped you on the track?
Landon: It’s incredible, I’ve always worked out, but creating a plan and becoming disciplined has been amazing. I feel just as fresh after a long race as when I started. It’s the endurance that really helps on the track.
Q: We hear you’re participating in an Ironman Half next month. Tell us more about this?
Landon: I’m doing an IronMan 70.3 in July. This is the first time I’ve done it. The inspiration behind it has come from my dad. He is an incredible athlete and he’s been doing duathalons for a while.
Q: What are your favorite healthy foods or meals?
Landon: Just eating clean food and a lot of raw foods. It’s been really good for training and recovery. I’ve been able to bounce back from a hard race, a hard run or a hard bike ride.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not racing?
Landon: Pretty much spending time with my wife, training or golfing. I love golf – huge golf fan.
Q: What are your goals for the future?
Landon: To be the most successful racecar driver, husband, and person I can be. Racing is my life and owe a lot to this sport. I’m blessed to provide for my family in such a way.
