5 Quick Tips From Our Personal Trainers
On Episode 2 of our Fit Frequency Podcast, “Let’s Get Personal,” we chatted with three of our experienced personal trainers. During the course of the show, we found out exactly why personal training can be so important for anyone looking to get into shape and start seeing results.
We had a great discussion with the team, as they provided first-hand insight and information into the world of personal training and fitness. They talked about why workout fads usually don’t work, broke down some fitness myths and let us know exactly why personal training is so beneficial for anyone trying to improve their health.
Make sure to check out the full episode for more great stories and advice, but for now, here are a few tips we wanted to share:
1. Avoid the Gimmicks
Looking to get in great shape? You don’t need to own the latest fitness gadgets. And you don’t have to go on a ridiculous diet that your friend’s-friend’s-cousin swears by. After all, as a species our bodies haven’t evolved that much over the past couple hundred thousand years. What got people in shape then still works now.
While fad workouts often make extreme claims of being the latest breakthrough in fitness, they tend to be gimmicky and unproven. That’s why they don’t stick around long. The same goes with fad diets that keep popping up then quickly disappearing. Thankfully, the grapefruit diet has fallen out of fashion.
Simply, working out efficiently and eating healthy continues to be the absolute best way to increase your overall fitness. The foundations of health and fitness will always be about having more muscle and less fat on our bodies. To do this, you want your body to be in an anabolic state. What’s that? Basically, it’s a resting state your body needs to enter to repair tissue and build muscle.
And how do you get into that zone to maximize your workout potential? Great question! That’s where personal trainers can help…
2. Stay Accountable With Personal Trainers
Working with a trainer gives you accountability. And that’s vitally important to achieving your fitness goals.
That’s because despite contrary beliefs, it doesn’t take 21 days to establish a habit for most people. It can take months or even longer. Too many people start feeling discouraged after only a few weeks and give up. But having someone by your side — especially someone who has a history of helping others find success — can be incredibly important to reaching your goals.
Personal trainers aren’t there to only make sure you’re hitting the gym on a consistent basis. They’re experts who make sure you’re doing the right kind of exercises for your specific skill level. They also make sure you have proper form and are performing your sets the right way. Basically, everything they do is about helping you achieve maximum results.
Trainers push you, support you, and ultimately, help you meet your short and long-term goals. Not only is it their job to help you succeed, it’s also their passion.
3. Fitness Happens Outside of the Gym
When it comes to achieving your workout and fitness goals, 20% of your success is inside the gym. 80% happens outside of it.
While those numbers may sound surprising, keep in mind, the majority of your time will be spent not working out. You can’t train hard in the gym for an hour, then go home and watch TV for the rest of the night while eating junk food and expect to see results. It would be amazing if it worked that way! But sadly, it’s not reality.
Think of the gym as the foundation of your health routine. Take all of the hard work and dedication you put into working out and then build off of that in your everyday life.
And just a friendly reminder: you need to sleep! Your body becomes more insulin resistant when you don’t get enough shut eye, which can prevent you from gaining the benefits you should have earned from a good workout if you got the right amount of sleep. So listen to your trainer, get to bed early and make the most of all your hard work.
4. Personal Training Is Worth It
Hiring a personal trainer may not seem like it can fit into your budget, but when it comes to money, it’s all about what you value.
Think about your spending habits for a moment. Do you drop money on going out to eat every week? Do you subscribe to a bunch of streaming services you barely use? Hey, no judgement here, we love a good show too! But instead of spending money on short-term entertainment options or overpriced meals, consider investing in yourself and your health. In the long run, you’ll feel better, be healthier and keep active.
Another thing our trainers want you to know — it’s completely fine to not invest in personal training for years at a time. Even if you work with a personal trainer for a few months, you’ll still learn valuable tips you can implement into your workouts and diet moving forward. If you find out it’s not for you, no worries. But the benefits can be so life-changing that it’s absolutely worth giving a shot.
5. Don’t Train for the Gym
Here’s something our personal trainers have heard time and again, there’s a belief among many people that you need to be in great shape before starting with a trainer. Nothing could be further from the truth!
Trainers are there to help you at any point in your fitness journey. Everybody has a starting point, and trainers have worked with people of all fitness levels. From complete beginners to workout enthusiasts, they’re able to lend guidance and provide encouragement for anyone who is looking to better themselves.
Another important thing to consider about jumping into the gym with zero experience is that you could potentially injure yourself, learn bad habits or quickly find yourself stagnating. Yeah, none of those are good.
Think of trainers like wellness coaches. It’s not about intimidation. They’re not there to be a drill sergeant and make you workout until you feel sick. Trainers are there to help you, to provide support and guide you straight through crushing your fitness goals and beyond!
Together, you can start seeing the results you’ve dreamed of.
