 International Women's Day

Owning your own Snap Fitness

For International Women's Day we spoke to two of our female Franchisees, who own and operate Snap Fitness clubs in the UK.

Here's what Katie, multi-club owner, had to say about running her own business.

What did you do before & what made you decide you wanted to open your own business?
I had a 20+ year career in the NHS before deciding to jump ship and lead the opening of our new franchise that was being setup as a subsidiary of our family business. I was ready for a fresh challenge and was attracted by the opportunity to start something new.

What are your key highlights of owning your own business?

The variety that owning a business presents – new challenges and opportunities arise every day!

Why is it important for women to run their own businesses?

I think it’s great for anyone to run their own business. Owning a business carries lots of pressures and responsibilities, but equally provides great freedom when you are able to make your own decisions and choices.

What’s the most important piece of advice you would give other women thinking about opening own business?

Go for it! I wouldn’t want to stereotype but think women often worry about being able to juggle the demands of a business alongside having a family. However, women are notoriously great at multitasking which is an essential requirement when running your own business.

How can we encourage more women to pursue entrepreneurship as a career?

Firstly, acknowledge that if it was easy then everybody would do it. The risks can be immense but so can the rewards.

As a mother of daughters, I always encourage my girls to push the boundaries, explore opportunities that will stretch and challenge them and to not be afraid or feel restricted to step outside of the perceived social norms. The same principles apply to women exploring entrepreneurship.

And finally… who are you inspired by and why?

I find the subject of psychology and how people behave fascinating so would have to say Billy Monger. Despite being involved in a potentially life threatening and career ending accident whilst racing, the positivity and ‘can do’ attitude he has shown since his accident is inspirational.
