How am I feeling today?

 It’s a question that we may not ask ourselves enough. It’s quite normal for us to schedule an appointment to the dentist or doctor to check on our oral and physical health, so why is it less common to check on our mental health? Afterall, our mental health does impact every part of our life, so it is important to stay in tuned with where you are at each day.

The Kaiser family foundation, reported During the pandemic, about 4 in 10 adults in the U.S. have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, a share that has been largely consistent, up from one in ten adults who reported these symptoms from January to June 2019.

That’s why, we created a quick and easy 5-minute mental health check you can do every day, anywhere:

Have I had enough water?
Our memory, energy and ability to concentrate can suffer when we're dehydrated. But recent research shows that our mental health, too, relies on adequate hydration levels. Research shows that drinking enough water can reduce the risk of depression and anxiety.

An article from the Mayo Clinic shared The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined recommended daily fluid intake which is: About 3.7 liters (15.5 cups) of fluids a day for men. About 2.7 liters (11.5 cups) of fluids a day for women.

Have I eaten foods that fuel my body?
Your diet and mood are strongly connected. As people around the world deal with higher levels of stress and anxiety, the reach for comfort foods like pizza, fries and sweets likely increased. These high-processed foods however are the least likely to help our mental health.

Instead, reaching for more fueling things like fruits, veggies, high-fiber foods, nuts and seeds will be more benefiting to your overall mood.

 Did I get enough sleep?
Sometimes it’s difficult to get enough ZzZ’s. Maybe you drank too much coffee throughout the day or your mind was racing with all the things on your to-do list for the following day. Whatever the reason, you’re not alone. Not getting enough sleep however, can skew with our mental health and mood the next day and is important to prioritize to help us feeling our best.

The CDC advises that adults get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep a day, with the specific recommendation varying by age.

 How am I feeling- mentally and physically?
With the business of life, sometimes we forget to stop and truly ask ourselves, “How am I feeling?” It’s important to stop and become aware how you are feeling both mentally and physically.

 What am I excited for today?
When you’re feeling down, it may be difficult to see the good in the day ahead of you. Asking yourself this question helps your mind shift out of those negative thoughts and look for something positive.

It’s proven that our brains are wired to seek out negative things but being aware of that means that you can take steps to adopt a more positive outlook each day.
