Franchise Case Study: SF Oxenford, QLD

What does it take to build a successful gym business from the ground up? This article follows the journey of two first-time fitness owners who’ve created a thriving club on the northern Gold Coast. With strong local insight, a clear vision, and support from the Snap Fitness team, they brought to life a space that reflects the needs of their community. From planning & site selection to launch and growth, this is a look at what’s possible when the right brand and the right approach come together.

Meet the Owners

Snap Fitness Oxenford is led by husband-and-wife duo Maya and Dion, experienced operators in the world of business but newcomers to the fitness industry. After nearly two decades in food retail and six years running the popular Paddock Bakery in Burleigh, they were ready for a change. Known for their quick thinking and strong leadership, like pivoting to a drive-through model during COVID, they bring grit, heart, and a deep understanding of customer experience to their new business in fitness.

Background and Motivation

After years in hospitality, Maya and Dion felt the pull to pivot into something new that they were genuinely passionate about. They still wanted to work with people and build a strong, service-led business, but without the burnout that often comes with food retail. When they came across Snap Fitness’ updated club fitout, branding, and evolving direction, it immediately caught their eye. It felt fresh, modern, and full of potential and realised this opportunity ticked all the right boxes.

Choosing Snap Fitness

After years in other franchise systems, Maya and Dion knew what to look out for and what to avoid. From the first conversation, they felt heard, respected and backed by a team that cared about their success. What stood out most was the balance of structure and flexibility. Franchisees could be as involved as they liked or take a step back and let the business grow with a strong team in place. The support from Head Office and the potential to create a thriving community made the decision easy.

Research and Development

Once they’d decided to pursue a Snap Fitness club, Maya and Dion didn’t just jump in. They did their homework visiting clubs, studying the brand evolution and engaging in open conversations with the support team. They knew they weren’t bringing fitness experience, so doubled down on understanding what would make their club successful. They were drawn to the flexibility & personalisation Snap Fitness offers, combined with the strength of a national brand so they wouldn't be going it alone.

Location Selection

Oxenford felt like the right fit from the beginning. It was a high-growth corridor with a family-friendly feel and there was a noticeable gap in the market for a premium fitness space. Maya and Dion took the time to get to know the local community, starting from a literal car park outside Woolworths, where they chatted to locals, patted dogs, and started building early relationships. That grassroots connection paid off, creating a foundation of trust that turned into real, long-term members.

Support and Training

From day one, Snap Fitness Head Office was hands-on and highly responsive. Whether it was compliance, operations, presale strategy or fitout, Maya and Dion felt backed at every step. They worked closely with Doyle from Gold Coast Building Projects, Steve from Dial A Plumber, and Ivan from Angel Painting to bring their dream space to life, and the result was nothing short of incredible. The club was not only built to spec but also launched with a strong local buzz and a clear plan to grow.

Opening Day

Snap Fitness Oxenford officially opened its doors in September 2024, with a Grand Opening celebration in October. The lead-up was fast-paced but full of momentum, with the build team working around the clock to deliver the region’s most exciting new gym. On opening, the energy was electric, with the club exceeding presale and growth targets and the club quickly became a local favourite. Members describe it as welcoming, motivating, and refreshingly down-to-earth.

Looking Ahead

Eight months in, Snap Fitness Oxenford is thriving, and Maya and Dion are just getting started. They’ve built a club that feels personal, powerful, and full of purpose. The member base continues to grow, the team is solid, and the sense of community is unmistakable. As franchise owners, they’ve found something that not only fits their values but gives them space to grow on their terms. They’re proud to be part of the Snap Fitness story and are excited for everything still to come.
