5 Tips To Help You Stay Hydrated

5 Tips To Help You Stay Hydrated

1 - ALWAYS have a water bottle in arms reach

The most important tip when it comes to staying hydrated is to always have a water bottle on you or nearby, and to sip from it often. Make drinking water as easy as possible in the spaces you spend most of your time:

At home - keep the water jugs full!

At work - keep a bottle or glass at your desk or where ever you spend most of your working day. For those who sit down for extended periods of time this is a great excuse to get up and move around each time you need to fill up.

2 - Drink water, even just 1 small glass, first thing in the morning

When you wake up in the morning you haven’t consumed water for several hours, so before you rush out the door, rehydrate! This is especially important if you exercise early in the day.

3 - Spice it up!

If you struggle to drink enough plain tap water, there are plenty of ways you can make it a little more exciting:

  • Herbal tea
  • Sparkling or soda water
  • Freeze natural fruit juice in an ice cube tray and pop a couple of cubes in your water OR
  • Flavour your water with:
    • A wedge or lemon or lime
    • A couple of mint leaves
    • Any other fruit or veg that takes your fancy! Berries, orange or cucumber.

4 - Hydrate well before and after intense physical activity

This is especially important if exercising outside, in hot or humid conditions or doing exercise that promotes excessive sweating. The average adult needs around 2L of water a day, but this doesn’t take into consideration losing water through sweat.

5 - Thirst vs. Hunger

Being in tune with your body and your appetite is important for so many reason. Did you know people often mistake thirst for hunger? This is because the symptoms of dehydration can actually mimic those of hunger. Keep this in mind next time you feel like you need to put something in your body but can’t quite figure out what it is… it may be as simple as a little H2O!

Implement the tips above to keep hydrated throughout your day.
