Top 5 Things Every Beginner Should Know About Gym Routines

2018-12-11 | By: SNAP Fitness

If you’re new to the world of fitness and can’t figure out where to start then we’ve got something to help uncomplicate things. Barbells and all the other gym contraptions can seem intimidating, but it’s important to remember that everyone starts somewhere. You just need to figure out where that is for you.

So how should a beginner start working out? You’ll need to first decide what you’ll be hitting the gym for. Are you simply looking to lose weight? Or perhaps build endurance and muscle? Once you’ve got a goal in mind, you can follow a workout routine that serves your purpose.

Finding the right gym for you

The next step is finding a gym. Maybe you already have one in mind, one that your friend often visits or perhaps a gym near you. Make a list of all the gyms you’re considering to train at and then go visit them.

This helps you filter out the ones that don’t match your needs. While it’s great to have a gym in your location, you also want to make sure that it’s equipped with the latest machinery, skilled trainers and offers a variety of other routines so that you can mix things up and break out of the monotony.

What to expect on your first day

Before you go charging in, ready to seize the day, it’s time to prepare yourself both physically- and mentally!

Pack a bag with all the essentials right from your water bottle to an extra pair of clothes if you feel like you’ll need them. And if listening to your favourite tunes fills you with motivation then don’t forget your headphones. Another plus point is owning a smart watch so you can throw it on and track your progress.

Now that you’re all ready, the next question that arises is ‘What should I do on my first day at the gym?’ The answer is simple - a little bit of everything and a lot of observation.

Take your time to explore the gym and get acquainted with the machinery. Ask questions and take notes. It’s all a learning process and your first day at the gym just like any other first day should be spent familiarising yourself with the basics.

Be practical

Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither were all the body-builders and muscular gym-goers around you. Remind yourself that you’re probably not going to do a hundred push-ups on your first day and that’s perfectly alright.

Instead spend your first day warming up before you get started with any intensive workouts. It’s always great to start off with cardio and then progressively move to other exercises. If you find yourself drawn to strength-training you can start off with light weights and see how your body responds.

The key is to know just how much to push yourself. It’s inevitable that you’ll be sore the next day but you don’t want to injure your ligaments or put your muscles in a spasm.

How often should you hit the gym?

Every gym has a number of fitness freaks hitting the gym every single day. While others come in a few times a week. Does that mean you should hit the gym daily? Not if you don’t want to!

Since your workout regime is tailor made to suit you, so should your gym frequency be. This doesn’t mean you should slack and only hit the gym once a week (or worse- a month). But this means that you need to find a frequency that works for you. Take into account your daily schedule and recovery time. As a beginner you can choose how many days you’d like to work out and start small. But remember to keep building upon this frequency and step out of your comfort zone every once in a while.

Make the Most of Personal Trainers

It’s always good to get a trainer to help you chalk out a workout plan so you can start working towards your dream bod from day one. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or take help from the trainers at the gym. After all, they’re there for a reason.

As a beginner, your personal trainer will always advise you on everything you should do at a gym. Not only do you get a spurt of energy with someone constantly motivating and cheering you on, but you also prevent yourself from injuries and accidents. Luckily, you’ll find a number of gyms in Dubai with personal trainers to guide you at every step.
