Biggest Obstacle
I have a very slow metabolism which made it hard at first to make progress. I would hit plateaus for 6-8 weeks at a time. Going on vacation and social activities also made it difficult to make progress until I started to make time to exercise. One vacation I made up my mind to exercise 30 minutes a day, no matter what, and I haven't stopped that regimen. Another factor was I started to use Alli ® which helped me make better choices on foods.
What Made You Start Exercising:
Everything came together. My youngest daughter was off to college and my other kids were on their own so I had time on my hands to devote to exercise. My son also became engaged so I made up my mind to lose 50 pounds before the wedding. I also had a friend who joined the gym at the same time. Having a partner is really important to keep you going. I lost a few pounds initially, but then Martha told me about a book "Fiber 35" that really got me going on the right dietary path. It was fairly easy to follow because I liked the foods and was able to eat several times a day.
Favorite Thing To Do At The Gym:
I love all the classes. My favorite day is Thursday when I do a cycle class, abs, and a muscle fitness class. I get a great cardio workout and muscle strength training so I feel great afterwards.
Typical Weekly Workout:
First, I had to figure out the best time for me to work out because of my work schedule. I used to go in the afternoon and do the elliptical, but that didn't work well. I started to go at 6 am and found that worked much better and I was beginning to lose weight. I also felt better the rest of the day. Then I started to go in the afternoon when classes were started. My week now is usually weights in the morning three times a week and cardio 4-5 times a week. The main cardio classes I take are step, cycle, and cardio blast. I also try to run, walk, or do the elliptical to get the additional training. I also do one Pilates class and two muscle fitness classes.
Biggest Changes in Your Diet:
The biggest change was to eat a lot more fiber and drink more water. Based on the book I try to eat 35 grams of fiber and drink 8 glasses of water a day. I quit drinking sodas too. Now I make sure to eat something for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I used to skip some of those meals. The nice thing is that I can eat a lot of good snacks that help me with getting my fiber. When I leave the house I always make sure I have some kind of snack like fruit, yogurt, or fiber bars. Before I would go through a McDonalds or other fast food place.
Best Thing About Being More Active & Losing Weight:
I have a lot more energy. This past summer my husband and I bought bikes so we could get out together on the trails and get some fun exercise. The cycle classes have really helped! We also do a long walk on the weekend.
Words Of Advice For People Just Starting:
You can't just diet. It takes a combination of exercise and diet. There will be plateaus so it is important to set reasonable goals and keep working to achieve them. My first year goal was to lose 50 pounds. The second year I wanted to lose another 20 pounds. Mix up your workouts to avoid boredom. Do some weights, cardio training, and take some classes. Having someone to workout with helps, as long as your schedules are the same. Don't be afraid to ask others for advice on how to mix it up for how to improve a specific area. Plan a schedule for a week at a time to make sure you get the right mix of cardio and strength training. If you can't make it to the gym then go for a walk or do something else at home. If you know you have lots of social things coming up, do extra during your workouts or don't take a rest day. If you are asked to bring a dish, take something healthy to share (and for yourself). Challenge yourself to do something you don't necessarily like. When you are done you will be surprised how much better you feel. I love it at Snap and it's always nice when someone tells you how well you are doing. Complete strangers have approached me to tell me they admire my dedication and determination and that makes it worth the effort.
