How many calories am I burning?
By Sandy Modzelewska
Ever wonder how accurate those flashing lights indicating the number of calories you just burned are? Why is it possible to burn so many more calories on one piece of cardio equipment versus another?
Let’s take a minute to examine just how it all works.
Calories burned depend on several factors: weight, height, age, gender, body fat, muscle mass, efficiency and some other factors such as environment. The muscle mass recruited and the higher the effort level, the more calories burned. Most gym equipment has been designed around a healthy young male's level of physical output so unless you fit into that demographic the number is not likely to be accurate. Most fitness experts will agree that calorie counters do tend to inflate calorie expenditure and some equipment is worse than others. I’ve seen some elliptical trainers very guilty of this, although the ones we have here at Snap are more realistic.
To increase accuracy, DO program as much information into the machine when beginning. Also, using a heart rate monitor will help keep you in the right target zone and some equipment now incorporates the heart rate reading into the calorie count. I own a Polar heart rate monitor watch that has a chest strap. I program my height, weight, age and gender into the watch then it monitors my heart rate during my workout and calculates calories spent. The caloric numbers are lower than what the machines might tell me, but they are more accurate. And as an additional bonus, I don’t constantly have to put my hands on the sensors, and am able to avoid lowering my heart rate thus burning more calories.
Despite its flaws, I do love the calorie counter. I get a great mental boost from seeing the number of calories all that sweaty effort burns off, even if the numbers themselves may not be so accurate. A better use for calorie counters may be to help us achieve daily goals or personal bests. Some research suggests that in order to lose weight one should exercise 6 times a week and expend 500 calories thru exercise. While the cardio machine may not be accurate in the numbers it gives you, recording the daily caloric expenditure will allow you to notice the days you come short, when to work a bit harder or longer, or point out when you have made improvements in your fitness level and achieved a new personal best.
