What is Cardiovascular Fitness?

Cardiovascular Fitness
Tracy Gray, M.S. Exercise Physiologist
Here we are, heading into ski season! Yea! If you want to have the best time on the slopes, you will want to get into good cardiovascular shape. As you all ready know, all your cells require oxygen to produce the energy needed for aerobic (with oxygen) activities. Skiing those long trails will definitely qualify as an aerobic activity. The heart is our pump for getting that oxygenated blood to the cells. The heart has two ways to try and meet that demand. One, the heart can increase the number of beats per minute (pulse) to deliver more blood, hence oxygen, to the cells. But this number can only go so high! The other way the heart can deliver more blood is to increase its stroke volume. Stroke volume is the amount of blood the heart can move per beat. To increase stroke volume you must make your heart muscle bigger and stronger with proper cardiovascular training.
To increase cardiovascular fitness and the power of your heart, most agree you need to exercise at 70-75% of your maximum intensity (with your doctor’s permission). This is monitored by calculating your target heart rate. In most gyms, there are posters with formulas to calculate your target heart rate. But, they rarely take into account your individual resting heart rate. The following is a more accurate formula for finding target heart rate. Take 220, minus your age, minus your resting heart rate, times 70 percent, plus your resting heart rate. The number you find will be your heart rate at 70% intensity or your target heart rate.
You can find your resting heart rate by taking your pulse for 60 seconds first thing in the morning while you are at rest. Here is an example.
220 – 40(age) – 60(RHR) X 70%(intensity) + 60(RHR) = 144(Target Heart Rate)
Now, pick your favorite aerobic activity and warm up to this target heart rate in 5-10 minutes and maintain it for 45 minutes. Then, be sure to cool down 5-10 minutes or until your heart rate is below 100. Frequency should be 4-6 days per week. This will give you a base fitness level you can bet will make your skiing more enjoyable. After you have achieved a solid base level of fitness, it will be time to start adding more advanced techniques. If you need more information or want to improve faster, think about personal training. It is the best way to see results quicker!
