Ranae O'Connell

Ranae O'Connell

Despite living a hectic life as a registered nurse. that provides plenty of excuses to not exercise, Clark County resident Ranae O'Connell has finally decidced to take back her life.  With the help of SNAP Fitness trainers Erin Allen and Billy Larkins, O'Connell has charted a course for better health and fitness.  "I am and RN (registered nurse) with Legacy Health Systems and I work long hours," O'Connell said.  "I have always had the excuse that it is too hard to find time to exercise, but I finally decided I needed to make the change and it is well worth it."  Since O'Connell joined SNAP Fitness three months ago, she has lost 13 pounds while also losing 6 percent body fat, a sign of her hard work.  "Having Erin and Billy available to work with me twice a week is amazing," she said.  "To have time with personal trainers to show me the proper way to exercise and help me with my diet is totally worth it."  O'Connell said in the past, she has spent twice the amount of money on diet food and products than she spends being a member at SNAP Fitness.  "I am confident with the help I get from the trainers," she said.  "They put me in a position to succeed.  They are very flexible with my work situation."  Since her program started, O'Connell says she feels like her energy levels have shot through the roof.  "I can't even think of going a year without a personal trainer again,"  she said.  "They have taught me how to live a healthy lifestyle."  O'Connell still has a ways to go but hopes by this summer she will have the body that she wants.  "SNAP Fitness has helped build my confidence back up," she said.  "It has been worth all the effort."

Annette Henkle

Although Battle Ground resident Annette Henkle lost about 55 pounds back in 2004/2005, she said she never really 'tightened it up" and decided she wanted to continue improving her health and fitness by increasing her strength and flexbility.  After recovering from a hip replacement, Henkle, 63, said she wanted to increase the strength in her hip and her overall flexibility, so she began doing personal training sessions with SNAP Fitness trainer Billy Larkins this past July.  "I have a lot of flexibility now, more than I've ever had before," Henkle said.  "I also have a lot more strength in both legs.  It's been wonderful."  Henkle, who works in retail at JC Penney, does 30-minute personal training sessions with Larkins three times a week and said she usually does her workouts in the mornings.  "it seems to be more effective for me to work out in the mornings, " she said.  Previously living in Florida, Henkle said she lived in Clark County in the 1980's and decided to move back to the Battle Ground area about five years ago.  Henkle said she decided to start an exercise program because it was something that she just needed to do for herself.  As she gets older, Henkle said she didn't want to get to the point where she couldn't move or had a hard time moving.  Henkle said she feels like she is definitely meeting her goals that she set for herself in her sessions with Larkins.  She said she also eats fairly healthy, which helps her meet those goals.  "The flexibility and the strength, I'm still meeting all of my goals and exceeding them," Henkle said.  "I'm hoping to continue meeting them and to hopefully gain some more muscle."  Aside from her workouts and other activities, Henkle sad she also works about 30-35 hours per week at her job.  She said she would like to be abe to go to the gym more than three times a week, but right now her schedule makes that hard.

Michelle Geer

Michelle Geer

Michelle Geer thought she already knew how to exercise.  Little did she know, there was a whole new level to discover.  Geer, the principal of Mountain View Christian School in Ridgefield, began a new exercise and diet program in May.  To her credit, she's had a great deal of success, losing 25 poinds and lowering her blood pressure, the latter development reducing the need for any medication to address the concern.  The 47-year-old Geer added a SNAP Fitness membership to her program almost two months ago and her efforts have intensified significantly.  "I would do what I thought was a pretty good exercise, walk a couple of miles a day, maybe do a few crunches here and there, obviously that wasn't enough," Geer said.  "Now, starting at SNAP Fitness, I've really ramped it up."  Geer, who is originally from Auburn, WA, moved to Ridegfield about severn years ago and then on to Battle Ground about five years ago.  Her and husband Mark are the pastors at the Mountain View Christian Center, which serves as the home of the Mountain View Christian School.  Geer won a free 1-month membership to SNAP Fitness as a prize when she participated in the Walk For Life in Woodland in the spring.  The prize included two sessions with SNAP Fitness trainer Billy Larkins.  Geer now heads to the gym five times a week.  She alternates her workout time between cardio and resistance, or weight training.  "I started out with about 30 miunutes of cardio and now it's like 45 minutes to an hour plus all the other training," said Geer, who praised Larkins for always helping her come up with new training ideas to keep her workouts fresh and new.  "When I started working with Billy, I could feel the difference right away from what he was showing me," Geer said.  "It was pretty challenging.  It showed me that I really wasn't in as good of shape as I thought I was in."  Geer says she definitly feels more energy as a result of her new fitness program.  She also says she's not anywhere close to being where she wants to e.  "I want to continue to lose more weight and achieve my goals for overall fitness and keep improving," Geer said.  "I know I haven't arrived yet."

Kelsy Bryant

Kelsy Bryant

When Kelsy Bryant walked into the Battle Ground SNAP Fitness location two months ago, she didn' have a clear vision for the changes she wanted to make in her life.  She just knew she wanted to feel better.  "I didn't walk in saying 'I need to lose 30 pounds right now or anything," said the 27 year old Battle Ground resident.  "I didn't want to set goals that were unrealistic."  said Bryant, a pharmacy technician at the Battle Ground Fred Meyer.  When Kelsy Bryant walked into the Battle Ground SNAP Fitness location, two months ago, she met with trainer Billy Larkins and quickly came up with a vision for how she could feel beter.  "I wasn't going to do training or coaching;  I thought I could handle it on my own, but Billy convinced me," said Bryant, who is already thankful her trainer did just that.  "When I started, I just wanted to feel better and have more energy and feel better in my clothes.  I've already achieved that and more.  I've already dropped a pant size and a 1/2 on top of feeling more energetic and feeling better about myslef.  It feels fantastic;  I didn't expect to drop sizes like this."  Bryant has lived in the Battle Ground area for the past five years.  She was a cheerleader in  high school, before, she said, at the age of 17, she had some medical setbacks that 'changed my whole body size and composition.'  In recent years, Bryant went back to school and spent most of her time studying and working a part-time job to pay the bills.  As a result, she allowed her physical fitness to take a back seat.  But, all that has changed.  "We've started a strength training program twice a week," said Bryant, referring to her work with Larkins.  "I go in and do cardio (work) several times a week on my own on top of that.  He has helped me build muscle and loose some of the chubbiness."  Bryant enjoys her time at the gym.  "Billy comes up wih stuff that I would never imagine." she said.  "I love it.  I'm never bored.  I'm always learning something new that I can come back in and do myself.  I'm very motivated and get bored easily."  But, Bryant says it's not all wine and roses.  "It's hard work no doubt about it;  it's not pretty, but I love it and it's got to be that way," she said.  "But, I don't get up and dread going. I feel like my whole day gets better if I get up and go to the gym.  Then, everything gets better."

Brad Weyer

Brad Weyer

Brad Weyer didn't necessarily need a total makeover. He just wanted to get his life under control before he turned into the guy needing to lose a 100 pounds.  "I just saw myself starting to not be motivated," he said.  "I just wanted to get myself working out and be healthy.  What I was doing before didn't work."  Weyer, 24, said he was living on the 'Taco Bell Diet' consisting of fast food, which he blames on his job as a manager at Safeway working overnights.  He started to notice that he was not feeling the same and he was relying on energy drinks to get him motivated.  "I was an avid Red Bull drinker, he said.  "I lived on  2-3 go get me through the night.  It was hard for me to eat properly and I felt myself losing natural energy because I relied on energy drinks."  Today, Weyer is feeling like he has his life under control.  He said he is toning up certain areas of his body and eating correctly.  Presently, he works out at the SNAP Fitness location in Battle Ground, where he is on a program designed by trainers.  He includes a cardio workout, followed by weight training.  "My biggest challenge always was to get up and work out," he said.  "The trainers have helped me with that problem and now I find myself having more energy.  I don't have to rely on the energy drinks to get me through the day."  Weyer says in addition to the fitness regimen, a new nutrition program has been equally important to his success.  "That was the hardest thing, by far, for me to switch my eating habits," he said.  "It's difficult for me to eat 4-5 times a day because of my job.  Since I learned it is important, I have been trying hard to follow through."  Weyer can't thank SNAP Fitness enough for the support he has received since getting on one of their programs.  Weyer says he has lost 15-20 pounds and is gaining muscle mass.  "Hopefully one day I can be that guy who is ripped," he said.  "But for now, I just want to keep getting healthy."

Shane Robinson

Shane Robinson

Shane Robinson knew he had to make a change.  So, that's exactly what he did.  "It was about a year ago," said Robinson, a La Center resident.  I was pushing 300 pounds.  I had a stroke about four years before that and I was just physically miserable.  I knew I had to do something different in my life."  Robinson, now 48, took the first step of purchasing a treadmill and he made a commitment to himself to walk on it for 20 minutes ever other day.  "I started walking on it and I lost some weight and I have been progressing since then, " said Robinson, who is a purchasing manager for Daimler Trucks in Portland.  Robinson joined SNAP Fitness in October, 2010.  He started adding more cardiovascular work into his workout regimen and also began to integrate weight training as well.  Robinson goes to the BAttle Ground SNAP Fitness location 4-5 times a week.  He also has two personal training sessions each week at the same location with trainer Erin Allen.  "Erin has been counseling me on nutrition and making my program more effective," Robinson said.  "I had some balance issues from the stroke so we're working on improving those."  In just over a year, Robinson has been able to drop 95 pounds.  Before he began his fitness program, he was insulin dependent, which required him to give himself injectins twice a day.  He no longer needs those injections.  "I'm eating better and I feel healthier," Robinson said.  "I give a lot of credit to Erin Allen for showing me the right eating habits and getting me focused and on the right track so to speak."  Robinson, who has two grown children with wife Suzie, has a new lease of life.  "I have much more energy," he said.  "I'm much happier at work.  In general, I'm just a much happier, confident person."

Connie Arndt

Connie Arndt

Every time Connie Arndt thinks about her new fitness program, she pictures herself mimicking a famous scene depicted by cartoonist Charles M. Schultz, creator of the Charlie Brown comic strip.  The scene that continually pops into Arndt’s vision is one of the character Snoopy happily dancing in the flowers.  “That’s how I feel,” said the 66 year-old Arndt.  Arndt retired about two years ago from a long career as a registered nurse.  Throughout her life, weight had always been a problem for her.  When she was working long, grueling shifts on her feet, she would try to get the energy she needed by eating.  After retirement, she realized she had to make some changes.  “When I finally retired, I looked at myself and said ‘this is not good’,” said Arndt, who moved to the Battle Ground area with husband Doug about 11 years ago.  Arndt tried dieting to lose weight, but didn’t have any success.  About three months ago she started a fitness program at SNAP Fitness in Battle Ground and now she’s dancing around like Snoopy in the flowers.  “I went in there and I’m sure glad I did,” said Arndt of SNAP Fitness.  “I’ve only been doing it for three months, but I’ve lost 25 pounds and eight inches off my waist.”  Arndt, who says she has 60 more pounds to lose, said before she started the program, she couldn’t bend over to tie her own shoes or even walk up and down her own driveway.  “I get a lot of enjoyment from the freedom of being able to move again,” said Arndt.  Arndt said she has focused mostly on cardiovascular workouts but has also started to mix in other training into her routine, including free weights.  She said she goes to the gym seven days a week.  “The thing that has really helped me is that when I walk in the (SNAP Fitness) gym, it’s a very comfortable atmosphere,” Arndt said.  “When you are in an individualized workout, they focus on you.  It’s like you’re the only person in the gym.”  Arndt said in just three months, her new fitness program has made her feel better than she did when she was in her 40s.  “Exercise must be the fountain of youth because it makes you feel younger,” Arndt said.

Cory Iverson

Cory Iverson

In November 2008, 27-year-old La Center resident Cory Iverson was ticketed for Driving Under the Influence (DUI).  The event made him face his own personal situation.  “It was just kind of an awakening,” Iverson said.  Iverson said he admitted to himself that he had a drinking problem.  He didn’t drink anything for a year and only drinks on rare occasions now.  He also became dissatisfied with his own physical condition.  While in high school in his hometown of Toledo, WA, Iverson was a multi-sport athlete.  Never a small person, the 6-foot-1 Iverson competed in sports at about 220 pounds.  By the time of his DUI arrest, Iverson’s weight had grown to 350 pounds.   “Once I quit drinking, I found out that I really liked getting back into shape and being healthier, “ Iverson  said.  Iverson lives in La Center, where he works as a poker dealer and supervisor at the Chips and Palace Casinos.  He started going to the SNAP Fitness location in Woodland and later began using the SNP Fitness facility in Battle Ground.  Iverson met with a SNAP Fitness personal trainer, who helped him set goals and develop a workout regimen.  He currently works out different parts of his body on a cycle of three days on and one day off.  “ I eat a lot better, “ Iverson said.  “I eat more salads and I don’t eat late anymore.  I’m really strict about not eating fast food.  I make sure I get to the gym.  I keep my workout routine energetic and exciting.”  Within the first year of his program, Iverson had lost 60 pounds and he was flattered by comments he was receiving from co-workers.  Today, Iverson weighs in at about 235 pounds, down 115 pounds from where he started.  “I have a lot more energy now,”  Iverson said.  “I use to stay up really late and sleep late.  Now, I get to bed earlier and get up earlier and I don’t  just sit at home and be couch potato.”  Iverson said he plays basketball and golfs a lot more than he did before.  Another benefit of his transformation is a new relationship with his girlfriend of four months.  “The weight doesn’t just fall off,” Iverson said.  “it’s hard work.  It’s 180 degrees different from my old life.  I like my life now.”

Dennis Kindrick

Dennis Kindrick

After a freak accident at work, Dennis Kindrick decided to take hold of his life and get back in shape six months ago.  " I was at work lifting a box and injured my shoulder,"  said Kindrick.  "After it happened, I was sitting around on the couch doing nothing and gaining weight."  Kindrick was always strong, but when he tore up his shoulder and couldn't do anything with his arm, he sat on the couch for three months and gained 40 pounds.  "I weighed 190 pounds before I hurt my shoulder," he said.  "But I started to feel sick because all I did was sit on the couch all day and I didn't like what I became."  Today, Kindrick weighs in at 220 pounds, but some of that is added muscle weight from his new training.  He wants to stay in the 200-pound range.  His success has come from his SNAP Fitness trainer Erin Allen, who has worked with him on a workout regimen and a diet that Kindrick has been able to maintain.  "He has worked hard with me on everything," Kindrick said of Allen.  "All the weight I am losing is being turned into muscle, which is exciting for me."  Presently, he works out at the SNAP Fitness location in Battle Ground six times per week.  He mostly sticks with the weight lifting trying to turn more fat into muscle, but he is also working on his cardio training as well.  He has enjoyed his success, especially when he can go home and share it with his two sons, who are also starting to lift weights.  "I have been able to give them tips because of what I have learned from the trainers here at SNAP," said Kindrick.  "They work with you on a workout and diet to make sure you succeed like I have."??

Jay and Jenea Martin

Jay and Jenea Martin

Jay and Jenea Martin have been married for 21 years and they just might have found a way to double that number. Just in the past year, the long time Battle Ground couple has found a new common passion – a shared fitness program that includes at least three trips a week to the SNAP Fitness location in Battle Ground. “We’ve made it 21 years and thanks to this, we might make it 21 more,” joked Jenea, a graduate of Battle Ground High School. The Martins met in El Paso, TX when Jay was in the Army. The couple have three children, including a 16-year-old daughter still living at home. Both Jay, age 44, and Jenea, 43, work in the construction industry. About three years ago, the Martins started thinking more about their health. They quit smoking and this year they decided to add some trips to the gym. “We’re both over 40 and we were running out of stuff to do together,” Jenea said. “What better way to spend time together than working on fitness goals?” Jenea wanted to lose a little weight, which she has, dropping 15 pounds. Jay had chronic back problems and was facing a surgery. “He figured lifting weights would help and now his back problems are virtually gone,” Jenea said. Jenea said there are no more future plans for Jay to have back surgery. “It’s just done wonders for him,” she said. “We just feel so good now that we are going to the gym. We’re feeling better than we have in a long time. It’s kind of been our little date night. We spend time together and have our fitness goals. It works.” Jay usually begins his workouts on a treadmill, while Jenea hits the elliptical. They each do free weights and then Jay heads to the rowing machine and Jenea gets on the stair climber. Most of their workouts are between 60-90 minutes in length. “It’s just a better quality of life,” Jenea said. “We want to have a healthy, happy, long life together.”
